What Is Copyright Alert System (CAS)?
If you've ever been caught downloading something you weren't supposed to, the Copyright Alert System is here to help. You know those times when you want to watch a movie or listen to a song and can't find it anywhere? Yeah, we know that feeling too. The thing is, other people have seen it. They're not sharing it with us—they're sharing it with themselves! The Copyright Alert System (CAS) is designed to help us fight against illegal file-sharing by involving ISPs. We provide them with information about subscribers illegally downloading our content so they can take action against them. So if you get an email from your ISP saying that they've detected copyright infringement on your account, don't freak out! They're trying to help us regain our property from thieves who refuse to pay for what they use! A recent study has revealed that the internet is like a one-eyed man in a forest when protecting copyright. The study found that ISPs quickly notify subscribers of potential infringement but often fail to give sufficient information about what constitutes infringement or how to avoid it. In addition, the notices can be confusing and intimidating, causing some users to stop using their internet connection. As a result, many ISPs are now developing new methods of alerting suspected offenders without scaring them away from the internet altogether. One such process involves sending more detailed messages regarding copyright laws and how they can be avoided—and even offering suggestions on where users can find legal content. The CCI believes the Children's Copyright Infringement Framework (CCIF) will help reduce unintended and intentional copyright infringement. The CCIF alerts parents about their children's online activities, so they can take steps to ensure their kids aren't engaging in any copyright infringement. In doing so, they hope to maximize parents' involvement in monitoring their children's online activities.
