What Is Original Design Manufacturer (ODM)?
What comes to mind when you think of the word "design"? For most people, it's a picture in their head, a concept they can see and understand. It's also something much more than that: it's a process that takes into account every single aspect of what a product is going to look like, from the outside to the inside, from the way it feels in your hand to the way it smells when you open the box. It's no wonder designers are such important people in our world. With them, products can live up to their potential and make us feel as good as they do when we use them! Designers are responsible for creating everything from buildings to cars, clothes to phones and even toothbrushes! Have you ever wondered where these designers come from? How do they learn how to make all these things? Well, let us tell you: most of them come from an original design manufacturer (ODM). An ODM works with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) who purchase products from the products that are ready-to-go but still customizable enough for each customer. You've heard a lot recently about the benefits of outsourcing, or as they're also known, "doing it yourself." We're not saying that you should outsource everything (but if you do, let us know how it goes), but there are some real benefits to working with a manufacturing partner. For one thing, having an ODM (original design manufacturer) can significantly reduce the time you take to get a new product into the market. For another thing, is there some technology upgrade or market shift that needs to happen for your product to take off? Your ODM is probably already on it. Finally: by the time you realize your product has potential and are ready to start developing it? Your ODM might have already made and released it. This means that you can focus more on what your company does best while letting them handle all your manufacturing needs. This setup has been proven repeatedly to result in higher profit margins for both parties involved, and who doesn't love higher profit margins?
