Conditional Access (CA) is a method used in digital television transmissions that restricts what viewers can watch. In other words, it only allows the service provider's customers to view the channels they are subscribed to. Conditional access is implemented with the help of scrambling and encryption algorithms to prevent unauthorized usage by consumers. This identification process can be either by the user's device identification or by the user's login credentials. Once the user is identified, the service provider will generate a session cookie that identifies the user throughout the session. A malicious hacker can use this session cookie to impersonate the user. For example, if the user logs in to a website and does not have an internal logging function, a malicious hacker can steal the session cookie and impersonate the user. A website should have an internal logging function and delete the session cookies from the user's device after a specified period. The CA unit connects to your cable or satellite feed, and your provider will use it to authenticate your card and provide access to your subscription. For example, if you have premium channels, your provider may ask you to insert your card to start your service. You must purchase a CA unit if you're switching sets or upgrading your current box. A CA unit is a one-time purchase but will last for years, so it's worth the up-front cost. We all know that every cable or satellite plan provider has different programming packages. Your neighbors can watch all the regular channels, but you must stick to the basic package because you think stand-up comedy isn't worth the extra expense. Or, your spouse can see all those premium channels from work, but you can't get them at home. Well, now no one has to miss out on their favorite shows!
