What Is Virtual Device?
When you hear the word "device," what comes to mind? Maybe a device that does something—like a television or a smartphone. On the other hand, a Virtual Machines doesn't do anything at all. It's there to make your computer think it's doing something when it isn't. Virtual devices are files in operating systems like Unix or Linux with no associated hardware. They can be created with the mknod command, for instance. You can think of virtual devices as a kind of optical illusion: they fool your system into believing that they're real when they're not. So why would you want one virtual devices are helpful when you want to access resources that aren't connected to your computer—like an external hard drive or printer—without plugging them into your USB ports every time you want to use them. Virtual devices are often used to extend the capabilities of operating systems; for example, a system might include a virtual machine for a wireless network card. This way, other computers with no wireless card – but with a virtual device installed – can connect to the network; another example is a virtual device for a printer. It allows other computers to print documents from the virtual machine. In cases like these, virtual instruments are often created for troubleshooting purposes. Virtual devices are like ninjas on a mission. They're not there, but they're doing something. Virtual appliances are used to fix errors in the operating system using a file/directory. For example, you can use a virtual machine to "suppose" an external device is monitoring your computer for viruses or bugs. The command mknod was used to produce devices in the "/dev/" directory, but now the udev device manager automatically creates and destroys device nodes in the virtual file system.
