What Is Brownfield?
Suppose you're trying to build a house and have an existing foundation that you need to work around, the process of making that house is called a brownfield. Brownfield is also used to refer to the implementation of new systems to resolve IT problem areas while accounting for established procedures. When designing the new architecture for software, it's essential to account for the existing and running software—you don't want your system to crash everything else! In the information technology context, brownfield refers to a piece of technology that was previously utilized but is no longer actively used or maintained. This term can describe a piece of software that has been outgrown or even a hardware device that Cannot replace due to its vital role in the company's operations. In many cases, brownfield technology is a relic of the company's early days and has been used for decades. Because it is no longer actively maintained, it is prone to failure, and upgrading to newer technology would be cost-prohibitive. The manufacturer no longer supports it or would require a complete overhaul to be used with current systems. As brownfield technology is no longer actively used, it is not receiving updates or maintenance and is at risk of failing at any time. The IT industry has been a hot mess lately. It's been so bad that it'd look like a brownfield site if you tried to make a graphic of all the failed attempts at delivering software changes to customers in the past ten years. And we're not talking about those sites that are just ugly and smell bad we're talking about those sites where you can't even tell what was once there because there's nothing left but rubble and dust. Ask your favorite IT company about their brownfield development if you don't believe us. They'll tell you It's not pretty!
