Self-driving cars have been in the spotlight for a while now, but turning that technology into a real, everyday service is still a work in progress. Beyond ride-hailing, companies are already using autonomous tech for deliveries and logistics and building trust in the system. Now, cities are moving from testing to actual rollout and that’s where things are starting to get interesting.

TL;DR

  • Uber and WeRide launch robotaxis in Dubai with no human driver.
  • Rides can be booked on the Uber app and are available in key areas, with Tawasul managing operations.
  • Uber has invested $100M and plans to expand the service to 15 more cities.
Uber and WeRide have now taken a notable step by launching fully driverless robotaxi operations in Dubai. Unlike earlier trials, these vehicles operate without a human safety driver, marking a shift from controlled testing to more real-world deployment.

Riders can book these robotaxis directly through the Uber app. The service is currently available across commercial and industrial zones like Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Investment Park Second, and Jabal Ali Industrial First, along with suburban areas and Al Hamriya Port. Local operations are being handled by Tawasul.

The launch also shows Uber’s ongoing investment in WeRide. The company holds a 5.82% stake and invested $100 million last year, with its equity now valued at around $150 million.

This rollout builds on a pilot introduced in December, when rides were free and included a safety operator. The move to a paid, fully autonomous service follows approval from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, which issued a driverless vehicle trial permit last month.

Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, Sarfraz Maredia, said in a statement that "Bringing fully driverless vehicles to Dubai is an important milestone in making autonomous mobility a global reality. This launch underscores our deep commitment to the UAE and our vision for a hybrid world — where drivers and AVs operate side-by-side to create a more resilient network. Especially during challenging times in the region, we are proud to be a partner to this city, ensuring that Uber is always there to help people move seamlessly and with confidence.”

Looking ahead, the partnership looks forward to expanding robotaxi services to 15 more cities over the next five years, including Europe. The model is similar to Uber’s collaboration with Waymo, where Uber manages platform and customer experience while its partner focuses on autonomous technology.
