If your phone company knows more about you than you do, it's probably Carrier IQ. Carrier IQ is a company that provides analytics software to various telecom providers. They've developed programs that offer information about smartphone users to cellphone carriers, like what apps they use, how often they use them, how long they spend on them, and even where the user is using them. The problem with this is that there needs to be a way for an average user to know whether or not her carrier has installed these programs on her phone. Even if she knows that her page uses the Carrier IQ program, she cannot opt out of it or stop it from collecting data about her activities and movements. The fact that this kind of information is being collected without our knowledge or consent raises serious privacy concerns—yet we have no say in whether or not our carriers can do this. Privacy advocates are up in arms over the Carrier IQ scandal, which involves a company collecting performance data on smartphone users. Carrier IQ gathers performance data, tracking and logging what users do on their phones. This can include calls made, texts sent, and emails received. While this is not necessarily an invasion of privacy in terms of content (e.g., Carrier IQ does not have access to the actual content of phone calls), it does present a risk to user privacy because it allows third parties access to information about whom you called or texted, whether you're using your phone to browse the web or send emails, etc. The issue came to light when reports revealed that Carrier IQ had collected information about users' phone activity without their knowledge or consent. It was reported that some phones were even sending data from users' text messages directly to Carrier IQ without permission from the device's owner!

Encrypted File Transfer

Encrypted file transfer is comparable to sending a coded message in a bottle. Imagine you have a treasure map, and you want to give it to a friend, but you don't want anyone else to be able to see it. How would you go about doing this? The next step is to take the map, roll it up, and then place it in a bottle before sealing it with wax. Your good buddy will be able to read it once you give them the key to open the lock and break the seal. At this point, everything is safe and sound. Essentially, this is how the transfer of encrypted files is carried out. When you wish to transmit a file to someone through the internet, it is quite similar to sending a package to that person. However, identical to the situation with the treasure map, you need to ensure that no one other than the designated receiver may access it. Encryption is a solution to this problem. Encrypting a file is analogous to placing it in a digital envelope and securing the flap. The encryption key serves the same purpose as the wax seal on the bottle; the only person who can break it is the one with the correct key. When you send an encrypted file, the data is jumbled up and rendered illegible for anyone who may intercept the transmission. When the recipient has the file, they will use their key to decrypt it so they may read the information that has been scrambled. If the package is sealed in this manner, no one, not even the person who finds it, will be able to open it or read the contents inside. It is similar to sending a top-secret message in a bottle, where the message can only be read and comprehended by the individual who possesses the correct key. Transferring sensitive information, whether personal information, financial data, or top-secret government secrets, via an encrypted file transfer is necessary for maintaining the confidentiality of the information. It's the same idea as putting the package in a locked safe and handing the key to only the person who is supposed to receive it. But it's done online.

User Principal Name (UPN)

You might think of your UPN as your email address, but that's only part of the story. The whole story is: your User Principal Name (UPN) is your email address plus the domain name that comes after the @ sign. Let's break it down: Your username is used to log in to Windows Active Directory. It usually has a combination of letters and numbers unique to you—so no one else can have your username. It has to be at least six characters long. So then, what's this "domain name"? It's basically like an extension on top of your username—it identifies which company or organization you work for, so they can tell who you are when they send out messages or emails to employees or members. So if you know your name is John Smith, and you work for Example Company Inc., you'd have a UPN like this jsmith@examplecompanyinc.com. We've all seen user names like "daniel. smith", "Jane. doe", and "john. smith". Have you ever wondered what those user names are? We'll tell you: It's a User Principal Name user; Principal Names (UPNs) are names you can use to authenticate yourself on the Windows operating system. You can also use them to abbreviate some long domain name lists. The UPN is also used to obtain a user's account in the Active Directory, which can be queried using the Active Directory Service Interface. This library type provides an interface to different kinds of directories, such as the user account database used by Windows. To query the account of a user using the Active Directory Service Interface, you must first obtain the UPN of the user. You can do this with the GetUser function. Once you have the UPN, you can use the FindByIdentity function to query the user's account information.

Superkey

If you've ever been to an RDBMS, you know there are more exciting places to be. They're usually grey and dull, with rows and columns and stuff. If you ask them what their favorite movie is, they'll probably give you a look of pity and tell you that they don't have time for film. One thing they like is uniqueness. They love it so much that some have gone so far as to create a particular term: superkey. A superkey is just what it sounds like a combination of columns that uniquely identifies any row within a table. A candidate key is a closely related concept where the superkey is reduced to the minimum number of columns required to identify each row uniquely. The most important thing to remember about superkeys is to ensure yours is unique! We're confident we've found the secret to happiness: a set of columns guaranteed to be unique to each customer! It's more than just an ID or some other boring thing. It will make your customers feel like they belong in your data. It makes them feel special, and you know what? They may be unique. So now you can give your customers something unique, and they'll feel part of something special just like you do! This is a classic "cart before the horse" problem. Every customer has a unique customer ID; however, it is not true that every customer has a unique SSN. If you were to store both on your table, you would risk keeping duplicate customer records. Your database must have a single key guaranteed not to repeat for your database to be truly unique. For a single key, there must be one piece of data that is always present and never repeated, and that piece of data must be the primary key.
