Stupid HTTP proxy! This term makes me think of a fancy, incredible cyberhero. You know what else? Sort of! Well, I'll fill you in on the details. An HTTP Proxy acts as a go-between for your computer and the web. You can stay in bed all day and have your butler bring you whatever you need. However, instead of a personal butler, you'll have specialized software that manages your online activity. To illustrate, imagine you're interested in checking out a site like www.google.com. The HTTP Proxy accepts the request and connects to the website on your behalf, saving you the trouble of typing in the address and sending your browser there. A request/response cycle is like sending a messenger to the coffee shop on your behalf. This is where things start to get exciting. Filtering the requests that pass through an HTTP Proxy allows you to restrict access to only the websites you want. This is great for businesses and schools that value productivity and want to prevent employees and students from wasting time on social media (as tempting as that may be). Another helpful feature of HTTP Proxy is its capacity to temporarily store data from visited websites in a cache. As a result, the HTTP Proxy can serve up the cached version of a previously visited website rather than having to retrieve it from the server again.
