What Is Fouled Up Beyond All Repair (FUBAR)?
Fouled Up Beyond All Repair (FUBAR). It's a word born in the throes of war, and it's come to mean something else entirely: it's a word that means "beyond repair." When something is FUBAR, it's so messed up that there's no way to fix it—and not just because you're an idiot who broke it trying to assemble your new desk lamp. FUBAR had its roots in World War II when American soldiers used it as a term for their broken equipment and situations. The word comes from the phrase "fouled up beyond all recognition," which became FUBAR. The tour was popularized by soldiers who were fighting overseas. Still, it wasn't until later that civilians started using it, too—it eventually became part of our modern lexicon. The origins of this word are unclear, but some say that it was influenced by the German word "furchtbar," which means "terrible." It is also used as an expression of extreme desperation or helplessness. It's hard to imagine that there ever existed a time when the world was not filled with fear. There was nothing before there were people, animals, or even trees (and indeed before there were computers). Then everything happened in a big bang, and everything was different forever. If you think about it, there have always been fears. Even in the beginning—even before anything existed—there must have been fears of what might happen next! Even after everything began happening all at once, there were still fears about what might happen next! Now that we have all sorts of things happening simultaneously (like computers), we have even more worries about what might happen next! So it seems that we will always need words like "furchtbar" to describe these fears so we can talk about them and feel less alone in them - whether new or old!
