What Is Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS)?
Going online is fast and easy with a cable modem termination system (CMTS) installed at your local hub site. A typical cable modem termination system includes a series of modems allowing subscribers to access Internet data services using cable networks. The cable modem termination system (CMTS) is a high-performance network device found at the headend of a cable company's network. It enables the exchange of digital video and data signals on the cable network with cable modems or other devices that support these media types. The CMTS helps subscribers connect to their homes, offices and businesses using high-speed data services like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or cable internet. It also allows them to surf, chat and watch entertainment programming on TV using set-top boxes and other devices that connect to this network as long as their cable provider supports them. These systems are mostly installed at the cable company headend facility, where they receive the cable signal and convert it to IP packets. From here, they are routed through the Internet. Internet service providers also use these devices to connect their customers to the Internet. Most ISPs lease these systems from the cable companies, where they are installed at the ISP headend facility and receive the IP packets and convert them to cable modem signals. Depending on bandwidth and data rate requirements, it can also control data flow to each cable modem. A CMTS also provides other essential functions for cable modems to communicate with each other. These functions include channel scheduling, cable modem authentication, and bulk data transfer. Different types of CMTSs are available in the market, each serving a unique purpose. Some of the common types of CMTSs are cable modem termination systems, multistream cable modem termination systems, and software-defined cable modem termination systems. Without a cable modem termination system (CMTS), you wouldn't be able to get high-speed Internet, and you wouldn't be able to watch all the awesome cat videos out there. So this has nothing to do with the Internet, but it's still pretty significant.
