What Is Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)?
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is the name of the standard that allows you to transfer data over cable TV systems. The standard supports high-speed data transfers, which means you can use your cable internet to stream videos and play games, download large files, and work on projects that require a lot of bandwidth. The first DOCSIS version was released in March 1997. It was a great start to what would become a groundbreaking technology, but it was only the beginning. Later, we adapted DOCSIS to serve the ever-growing demand for symmetric services like IP telephony. That's when we released version 2.0 in December 2001. It was in August 2006 that we got our hands on something truly revolutionary: version 3.0! This new standard allowed for significantly increased transmission speeds both upstream and downstream and included support for IPv6. That's right: no more worrying about your parents' router not being able to handle their game streaming! Best of all, this update maintains compatibility with previous versions of DOCSIS so that you can be sure your Internet connection will keep up with you wherever you go! Cable modems are a lot like the old-school video game consoles. You know, the ones that didn't have the Internet yet were just for playing games? Yeah, that's right, they are both awesome but do things differently. A cable modem is basically like a gaming console because it has to play by two sets of rules: The first set is called DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). It's a worldwide standard for cable companies to send data from their servers to their customers' computers. The second set is called EuroDOCSIS or DOCSIS for America (because Europe and America have different standards). This one is used by American cable companies, which use different frequencies than European cable companies because of their PAL television encoding system (an analog color television encoding system) versus the NTSC (National Television System Committee), which is an analog broadcast color system in the USA. So what does all this mean? It means you can use your cable modem anywhere in the world as long as it supports one of these two standards, and most do! The latest version of DOCSIS also supports high-definition televisions (HDTVs), so if you're looking for an easy way to watch all those Netflix shows in crisp resolution, look no further!
