What Is Van Eck Phreaking?
Have you thought about what reading someone else's mind would be like? Maybe you're thinking of the kind of person sitting at the bar and trying to guess what everyone else is thinking: "Oh, that guy's thinking about his taxes. " Or maybe it's more of a "What do you think? " Game, in which case you're probably better off just asking them. If neither of those scenarios sounds appealing to you, or if they're not even close, you should consider van Eck's phreaking. Van Eck phreaking is one kind of digital espionage whereby an eavesdropper detects and analyzes digital signals using equipment to pick up the electromagnetic emissions put out by a cathode ray tube (CRT) or LCD. It makes it possible for someone to read the images on another person's display from a distance. It works like this: You set up some antennae near their computer and then analyze the electromagnetic waves emitted by their monitor or television.You can figure out what they see on their screen because every pixel has its frequency (and, therefore, wavelength). Then you must decipher those frequencies and reconstruct them into an image! Van Eck phreaking is not very common, but it is an excellent example of the types of exploits possible when electromagnetic emissions are not adequately protected. By implementing technology that blocks or suppresses electromagnetic emissions, companies can protect themselves from the risk of Van Eck's phreaking and other exploits. How could you see what's on that screen? Well, you're in luck! You can access the information on a display using electromagnetic radiation. It was discovered by a Dutch researcher named Wim van Eck in 1985. In his paper, "Electromagnetic Radiation from Video Display Units: An Eavesdropping Risk? ", he provided the theoretical explanation that makes Van Eck's phreaking possible.
