What Is Trunk Port?

The term "trunk port" refers to a port on a switch capable of handling many Virtual Local Area Networks concurrently and is hence known as a "trunk port." "port" is what you'll hear referred to in this context. Imagine it as a superhighway that carries data traffic; it can support many vehicles (or VLANS) that are all traveling to different areas simultaneously without slowing down! Imagine it as a superhighway that carries data traffic! When you connect a trunk port on one device to a trunk port on another device, such as another switch or a router, it enables the communication between all of the VLANS on the first switch and all of the VLANS on the second device. This can be accomplished by connecting a trunk port on one device to a trunk port on another device. This can be achieved by appending the VLAN ID to each data packet as it travels through the network's trunk port. You might think of a trunk port as similar to a toll booth you see on the side of the road. A trunk port "inspects," or investigates, every data packet that passes through it in the same way as a toll booth does, seeking a tag that identifies the VLAN to which the packet belongs. This is done in the same way that a toll booth does. Based on the VLAN ID tag, the trunk port is aware of which VLAN the data packet should be routed to in the same way that the employee at the toll booth is aware of which lane you should be in based on your destination. Trunk ports are components that are an absolute necessity for constructing a network that can accommodate a large number of virtual local area networks (VLANS) and enable communication between such VLANs.
