What Is System Log (Syslog)?
It's time to roll up your sleeves because we're about to dig into some Syslog. What is Syslog? It's a record of the events that occur in your operating system. These events include informational messages, errors, and warnings from drivers and software. The Syslog shows you how the OS was loaded, which can help you troubleshoot problems or ensure everything runs smoothly. The Syslog is like a book of the computer's memories. It's a record of all the events on your system and can tell you who was here and what they did. But unlike a book, this one is digital and kept track of by an OS-specific program. System logs help track the history of changes and events that may have contributed to the current state of your computer. You can view system logs on Windows by clicking on the "Resource Monitor" icon in the taskbar and clicking on "Logs" in the Resource Monitor window. Most modern Linux distributions also have a log viewer that you can find in the menu. Macs have a built-in log viewer in the system reports menu. The Syslog is usually configured to store records of events in real time. In most cases, the length of time that a document is stored is configurable. There is typically a facility to preview and export the logs if needed. Records are usually time-stamped to view the sequence and order of the events. Logs are generated in a machine-readable format. All OSs have a logging capability. Some OSs have a centralized logging capability, while others may have a distributed one. Logs are classified and logged based on the importance of the event. The records are like the story behind the scenes of a movie. You know, the one that explains how they could make it as good as it was. The logs are like that. They're the back story on your computer and help you figure out what happened when something went wrong or went right!
