What Is Surface-Mount Technology (SMT)?
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) has piqued your curiosity. You've come to the right spot, then. If that's the case, let's go back to the beginning and review the basics. Electronic circuits can be assembled without matching drill holes in the circuit board when surface-mount technology (SMT) is used. The adhesive is used to stick tiny components right onto the board. Similar to attaching stickers of cute creatures to your notebook, small electronic components can be stuck there. You may be wondering why we would want to do that right now. For one thing, it enables a shrinking in the physical dimensions of the circuits themselves. We all concur that less drastic measures are better (at least regarding electronics). SMT circuit assembly is faster and more cost-effective than the standard technique of drilling holes and inserting components. A good analogy would be attempting to build a Lego home without ever having done so before. To what extent do we need to know how to attach the parts? Before adding components, solder paste is spread across the board. After being placed on the board, the details are picked up by a sophisticated pick-and-place machine (technical keyword warning!). This machine is a giant robotic arm that can pick up and precisely position individual parts. After the components have been placed on the board, the board is heated to seal the connections between them. This process is known as reflow soldering (yet another technical word for you!). The component is safely connected to the board after the cooled and hardened solder. We can call this issue resolved. You should now be familiar with the basics of SMT. This novel technique for constructing electrical circuits eliminates the need to drill holes and insert components, which is time-consuming and costly. And it's intriguing to watch a pick-and-place machine at work. Before we wrap up, here's one last piece of trivia: SMT has existed since the 1960s. Although the technology has lived for over 50 years, it took off in the 1980s. Who would've thought something as innocuous as sticking labels to a circuit board could have far-reaching consequences?
