What Is Statistical Process Control (SPC)?
There are some things in life you can't control, but that doesn't mean you should give up on them. Statistical process control (SPC) is a quality-control approach for processes that use statistical information. Some of the techniques used in this approach are attributed to scientists at Bell Laboratories in the 1920s. In general, SPC involves taking measurements of a process and using those measurements to determine whether the process is in control. If it is, you can say that the process is stable and predictable. If not, you'll need to figure out what's causing the problem and implement a change so your function can become more stable. If you're an engineer, you probably know all about statistical process control (SPC). If you're not an engineer, this is the first time you've heard of it.SPC is a way of looking at your processes and trying to refine them to produce the same results consistently, every time. It involves looking at process variabilities and using tools like control charts to ensure you get the same output every time. Engineers may use standard deviation equations to streamline or refine results. SPC is used in manufacturing and other fields where consistent products are produced, or services are provided. Statistical process control (SPC) is a method of monitoring and improving the quality of a process. It can be applied to many different industries and in many different ways. In a medical environment, for example, SPC may be used to check on the accuracy of lab tests or the amount of time people spend waiting in line for care. In an airline operation, statistical processes can check baggage delivery accuracy, flight delays, or other aspects of service. Even manufacturing scenarios can benefit from statistical process control—it's used in efficiency, productivity analyses, and quality control.
