What Is Persistent URL (PURL)?
If you've ever had to send a link and then email back and forth with someone, asking them to click on it, only to find out that the link has changed, you know how frustrating it can be. Well, now there's a solution. PURLs are a way of making your link last forever. They're similar to regular URLs in that they point toward a server that hosts the resource you want people to see. But instead of pointing directly at the server, they point to an intermediate resolution service that resolves the PURL with the resource's current address and then redirects the request. Even if your site moves from one server to another, if it gets taken down or if you change hosts, if you get hacked, if your domain name expires or if anything else happens that could make your URL go away forever (or until you pay $15/year), your PURL will stay precisely where it is! A PURL is a PO box with an address sustained; if there are any changes to make to the owner's address. Like the postal service receives forwarding information, the postal service delivers mail to the owner's new address. It's not just your mail that can change, though! It's also your business address, email address, and social media accounts. You may have multiple email addresses for different purposes or different social media accounts for different audiences (or both). So how do you keep track of all of these things? A PURL can help. A PURL (Personalized URL) The Permanent URL Locator, or PURL, is a location for Web resources that can change over time without affecting any dependent help or system. It's sort of like a home base for your favorite websites. If the website you're looking for changes its address, you'll always be able to find it in your PURL's directory.
