What Is Peering Exchange?
To keep the internet running smoothly, ISPs meet at a central location known as an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) to peer and exchange traffic. It's similar to a social gathering where Internet service providers (ISPs) can meet one other, chat, and share information while enjoying light refreshments and good company. Imagine data packets as vehicles traveling along a vast network of interconnected highways that make up the internet. Consider what would happen if vehicles traveling between New York and Los Angeles were forced to travel via Europe. So, do you have to go a long way out of your way and spend much extra time doing it? That occurs when Internet service providers (ISPs) can't communicate directly with one another to trade data. Peering exchanges are like a new highway that allows drivers to skip the long route between New York and Los Angeles. Then, how does it function, exactly? Internet service providers typically bring their routers to an IXP to connect to the hub's communal network. Because of this, traffic can be transferred directly between the ISPs without going via any intermediates. Due to this, everyone experiences better internet performance and communication speeds. The "peering policy" is an essential part of the peering process. This is a collection of guidelines for how internet service providers (ISPs) interact with one another regarding traffic sharing. Some Internet exchange points (IXPs) restrict peering between members to those that match specific criteria, such as a minimum bandwidth requirement. Anybody can join other IXPs because they have looser rules. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is another technical word you'll hear while discussing peering. ISPs utilize BGP, a routing protocol, to communicate network information to one another and route data accordingly. Because of BGP, ISPs can reroute their traffic around slow or crowded areas. At last, let's consider what's good about peeking. Providers can save money on client internet service by connecting directly to other providers at an IXP. This is because they no longer incur costs whenever their traffic crosses a public network. Because data isn't forced to detach, peering improves communication speed and reliability. ISPs can build direct connections, trade traffic, and ensure the smooth operation of the internet via peering exchanges, which might be considered professional networking events. Because BGP allows ISPs to select the optimal path for their traffic, they save money and see gains in speed and reliability. So, if you're an Internet service provider, pack up your router and drop by your local IXP; you never know who you could meet there.
