What Is Open Virtual Memory System (OpenVMS)?
OpenVMS might not be the most popular OS, but it's certainly one of the most unique and more than just an operating system. It's a way of life. OpenVMS was first released in 1979 as a computer server OS that ran on Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)'s VAX family of computers, which succeeded the PDP-11 line. Since then, OpenVMS has been updated several times to accommodate new technologies and meet customer needs; it's currently at version V8.4.0. The system is designed around stability and reliability: it doesn't crash or hang up like other operating systems. In fact, many businesses choose OpenVMS because it never crashes or hangs up… ever! Are you worried about your system crashing or hanging up on you in the middle of an important project? Don't fear that OpenVMS won't let that happen, either! OpenVMS is the system that makes you feel like a real adult. Its multi-user, time-sharing, batch, and real-time processing all rolled into one. OpenVMS also pioneered many features that are now standard on high-end server operating systems like Microsoft Windows Server, including Multiple user accounts with different levels of access to system resources and The ability to add new hardware and software to an existing computer without affecting the data or other programs on it A graphical user interface (GUI) that allows users to interact with the computer by clicking buttons and moving icons around a screen instead of typing commands in text mode. The best part? It's available in your local grocery store! It's also super high availability. That means it can run on many machines, even if some are offline or broken. OpenVMS? It's just so easy. You don't have to worry about setting up virtual memory or anything like that; your computer does that for you. And if you want to get fancy with your machine, that's fine too. Please turn off the automatic settings and do it yourself! You can even use OpenVMS for transaction processing if you want to go nuts with this system (and we mean go nuts).
