What Is Neighborhood Area Network (NAN)?
Neighborhood Area Networks (NANs) are the best thing to happen to your neighborhood since the community pool. With a NAN, you can connect to the Internet quickly and at little expense until your neighbors complain about how slow their Netflix is. NANs cover only a small number of blocks close to an 802.11 access point. With the help of an omnidirectional antenna, a single access point could cover a radius of more than half a mile. Users who wish to connect to a NAN can then use a directional antenna to get an improved signal from the access point. In a world of wireless connections, NANs are the new hotspots. NANs (for Neighborhood Area Network) are groups of people who want to share their broadband connection. If you plan on sharing your Internet connection with others in your community, a NAN allows you to do so. For someone else to connect wirelessly to your shared Internet, they'll need a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or PDA. This differs from hotspots, usually commercial Internet access points with a range of only 300 feet. Hotspots are generally used to attract tech-savvy customers to coffee shops, airports and restaurants. NANs offer much wider connectivity ranges than hotspots—so if your neighbors are within reach, they can join you on the 'net! When it comes to using the Internet, there are two types of people: those who pay for it and those who get it for free. If you're an internet user not paying for your connection, you're using it illegally. You might be sharing someone else's Wi-Fi connection or connecting to a neighbor's router without their permission. Either way, you're violating someone's rights by stealing their bandwidth and bandwidth speed. What if we could make illegal usage of the Internet legal? That's precisely what NANs (Neighborhood Area Networks) do! NANs allow people to share their Wi-Fi connections with their neighbors, which reduces the cost of each user's Internet bill while increasing bandwidth speed and accessibility.
