What Is Logical Data Model (LDM)?
You know that feeling when you're looking for something, and it's just not there? You've looked high and low, but no matter how hard you try, it just doesn't seem to be there and then, one day, while visiting your cousin in Missouri and taking a walk through his backyard, you find it. It's just lying there in plain sight! but why didn't you see it before? That's what a Logical Data Model (LDM) is like. There are all these files around the office—the ones on your computer and those on everyone else's computers (and on their phones). They're all over the place! But they're not organized very well. So, if something goes wrong with one of those files, or someone needs to find information from another file, how are they supposed to know where to look? That's where a Logical Data Model (Short for LDM) comes in. An LDM is a kind of like a map that shows where all your files are located concerning each other. It will ensure everyone knows which files are related and how they're connected so that when someone needs information from another file, they'll know exactly where to look for it! The logical data model is a means to an end. It provides a road map for designing the physical database, but it's not the only road map out there. It's not even the best one. The logical data model is just that—logical. It defines your data in terms of entities and attributes, which is cool, but what happens when you want to implement your data? It would be best if you had a physical model. The physical data model bridges your logical model and your technology-dependent implementation. It can be implemented using SQL, NoSQL databases, or even FileMaker Pro (though we don't recommend that last one). Sound complicated? It's not! The point is that there are many different ways to implement your logical model into a physical one, so don't worry if yours doesn't look exactly like ours—we can still work together!
