What Is Layer 7?
Layer 7 is the layer you'll want to go to to find out who's been sneaking around in your house and stealing your tea. It's the layer that deals with applications and where the real action happens. We know what you're thinking: "What about layer 6?" Don't worry about that one. It's just a bunch of wires and cables running through walls. It doesn't do anything! Layer 7 is where all the magic happens: identifying parties, quality of service, privacy, and user authentication. Layer 7 also identifies constraints on data syntax. If anything is going on with your data being transmitted (like someone trying to send an MP4 file over HTTP), then Layer 7 will get involved and make sure everything works out OK. The application layer is where you find the graphical user interface. This is where your mouse clicks, screen displays, and applications live. It's a pretty small section of the OSI model—it's only one layer, but it's important because it's where you interact directly with your computer. The application layer is also responsible for displaying images and data to the user in a human-readable format. That means when you see a Word document on your screen, it's just a bunch of ones and zeroes (digital data). The application layer takes those and zeroes, translates them into something that looks like words on paper, and then sends them to your monitor so you can see them! The application layer is like the first date between two people. It's where you make sure you're picking someone you want to spend your time with, and you get to know each other by playing a game or talking about what you're all about. The application layer has one job: to ensure that the two parties (you and your partner) are compatible. It does this by checking if there are enough resources, like bandwidth and memory, on both sides of the conversation—and then it ensures that both sides are ready to talk. Once everything is prepared, it provides both parties understanding what's going on by sending messages back and forth—or in this case, making sure they're listening closely!
