What Is Job Scheduling?

TechDogs Avatar

Job scheduling is like a party planner for your computer. It allocates system resources to many different tasks by an operating system (OS). The system handles prioritized job queues awaiting CPU time, and it should determine which job to take from which line and the amount of time to allocate for the job. This scheduling type ensures that all jobs are carried out fairly and on time. For example, what would you do if you have many guests coming over and asking you when they can get their food? You'd probably have each guest write down their name and the number of guests on a piece of paper and then put them in order by priority. Then, when you're ready, you can pull out the first few names from the top of your list and go off to find them some food! While many job-scheduling programs exist, most operating systems include standard job-scheduling abilities. Some programs, including database management systems (DBMS), backup, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business process management (BPM), feature specific job-scheduling capabilities as well. The job scheduler is the heart of your business. It's the program that lets you control your work, and it's the one that keeps everything running smoothly. The job scheduler is like a human manager: it monitors jobs, schedules tasks, and even communicates with human operators if necessary. An excellent job scheduler will keep track of everything—from payroll to operations—and ensure it's done on time. So If you want to build a system that tracks your inventory and automatically sends out alerts when stock is low, then you can hire someone who knows how to code. But if you're unsure what kind of system you need or if your company has grown past the point where one person can handle all the data, it's time to call in a professional.
