What Is Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE)?

In the early days of computing, if you wanted to connect a hard drive to your motherboard, you'd have to use an external circuit board connected by an umbilical cord. This was because computers were so expensive that they could only afford to save space on internal components that could be used for other things. Then IDE came along and changed everything. Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) is a standard interface for connecting motherboards to storage devices such as hard drives and CD-ROM/DVD drives. The original IDE had a 16-bit interface that connected two devices to a single ribbon cable. This cost-effective IDE device carried circuitry and included an integrated disk drive controller. Before IDE, controllers were separate external devices. The IDE interface is a relic of the past. It's a bit clunky and doesn't offer much speed or power—but it's still reliable and easy to use, so there's no need to get rid of it. The IDE interface contains two IDE device connections and two motherboard connectors for two data cables. An IDE-integrated controller sends 512-byte blocks between the drive and motherboard, which houses up to four chipset-controlled IDE devices within one system.
