What Is Infrastructure as Code (IaC)?
What if you could use software to provision and manage your entire technology stack? Infrastructure as code (IaC) is a type of IT abstraction where professionals provision and manage a technology stack with software rather than setting up hardware systems. Infrastructure as code can be used to provision cloud systems and virtualize various software environments. The objective of infrastructure as code is to provide the same level of abstraction for managing computing resources that software developers use when writing code. IaC tools offer an abstraction layer over traditional configuration management tools such as Puppet and Chef, which are used to provision bare metal servers and other infrastructure components. Infrastructure as code is so excellent, you guys. Because it's code, you can write it, change it, put it in a repository, and even move that code from one place to another. And the best part is, you don't have to worry about hardware systems because they're all provisioned as code! So next time someone asks what infrastructure as code means, tell them they don't need to worry about hardware anymore because everything is code now! Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is a great way to manage the changes in your infrastructure. It's like the code you write for your website but for all the servers, networks and services that make up your site. But if you're not careful, IaC can get complicated fast. Here are some of the challenges our customers have faced when using IaC. Getting the test environment and production environment to sync up. You want your development team to be able to test their code on a local copy of the production environment before deploying it live. But you also need an environment where you can test changes without worrying about downtime or breaking things for your users. Keeping documents organized - When there are lots of moving parts in your infrastructure, it's easy for documentation to become disorganized and hard to find what you need when you need it!
