What Is Horizontal Enterprise Portal (HEP)?
In a world where everyone is getting increasingly connected, it's no wonder that the term horizontal Enterprise Portal (HEP) has become popular. A horizontal enterprise portal is a specific type used to access various business functions through a local area network (LAN), vast area network (WAN) or the Internet, such as Yahoo's home page. A HEP is also a mega portal because almost anyone can access it anywhere in virtually any location. The growth of HEPs has led to increased demand for people who can build these websites and manage their content. Many companies are looking for talented people who can create effective HEPs that provide their clients with all the information they need in one place. HEP is to a vertical enterprise portal (VEP) like a bicycle is to a motorcycle. A VEP is specific and purpose-built for one department or business function. It's used by personnel in that department to perform particular tasks. For example, an e-commerce VEP would be used by personnel in the e-commerce department to help them manage customer accounts and fulfill orders. A HEP is more flexible—it's not tied to any department or business function but instead supports all departments across an organization. A company could have multiple HEPs if it has several different business units or branches worldwide. Each of those HEPs would support all departments within that branch or division to collaborate seamlessly. The HEP is the hub of the wheel. The HEP is where it all comes together, so we call it "The HEP." It has menus and links to many diverse and enterprise-wide VEPs. For example, a single click on any of the following links instantly brings a user to a screen that allows vertical access to multiple types of information in that department or business function: Production Department, Parts Department, Shipping and Receiving Department, Accounting, Human Resources and Security. It's also got some pretty cool features, like an integrated calendar system and a tool for creating interactive reports on demand.
