What Is Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM)?
Data is like a cat—it's always making its way into your life, whether you want it to or not. So why not give your data a place to live that's as fun and exciting as it is practical? That's why we created Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM). With HSM, your data can live in luxury! It can be stored on hard disk drives, optical disks, and other low-cost media, such as magnetic tapes. But unlike ordinary storage management software, HSM ensures that your precious data isn't confined to just one type of media. Using HSM, you'll never have to worry about losing your data because it got stuck on the wrong kind of storage medium again. Keep an eye on it—it will probably try to escape at some point! Memory is like a cache for your computer. It's where you store the most active data—the stuff you need to get at quickly. The rest of your data is stored on slower, cheaper storage devices. But what if you could get away with storing all of your memory in one device? That would be a pretty sweet deal. Well, HSM technology is here to make that dream come true! With HSM, you can keep your most frequently used data on expensive static random access memory (SRAM) while storing less frequently accessed data on dynamic random access memory (DRAM). Heterogeneous computing environments are tricky. That's why we have hierarchical storage management software (HSM) to help us keep our files in the right place at the right time. The HSM tool monitors data use and keeps frequently accessed files online. Files that are accessed less frequently are moved to slower storage devices. The most active and frequently accessed files remain on costly storage devices until they are no longer in use, at which point they are moved back to optical or tape devices. All your data is available for use, whether stored online, near-line or offline; this means that you can always get at your data when you need it, no matter where it's been put away!
