What Is Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)?
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (Short for L2TP) is the protocol that makes VPNs possible. It's like a tunnel: You need a destination, but once you're through, you can see what's on the other side! L2TP is like the Data Link Layer Protocol in the OSI reference model but is a session layer protocol. This means it encrypts and decodes your data packets before they reach your destination. Once they've been decrypted, they're sent on their way again—but now they're secure! This makes L2TP great for sending sensitive information over public Wi-Fi networks without worrying about someone else snooping on your stuff—and it also makes it perfect for getting around pesky firewalls! UDP ports are the best. They're, like, the fastest and the easiest. That's why they're used for L2TP communication. L2TP is a Layer 2 protocol that provides tunneling for secure point-to-point tunneling for virtual private networks (VPNs). It was designed to enable secure remote access to corporate network resources using encryption and data compression provided by IPSec or Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP). As L2TP does not provide any security for data, such as encryption and confidentiality, an encryption protocol such as IPsec is often used with L2TP. This term is also known as Virtual Dialup Protocol (VDUP). L2TP is the best of both worlds. It's got the speed of PPTP, but it's also got the security of Cisco's L2F protocol. It's like a gateway drug to virtual private networking. L2TP saves you money on your dial-up bill, and it also gives you options for how you want to connect to the office—so if you're traveling or if there are just too many people at work trying to use the same network connection (but not enough people in your office), then L2TP can help out! It also makes it super easy for your IT department to keep track of who is using what resources and when—and this way, they can ensure that everyone gets what they need without having too much overhead on their department's budget.
