SHA-3 competition to develop a new secure hash algorithm was held by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) in 2007. In other words, TKIP is the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol. The security protocol it explains is highly sophisticated, and the name for it is suitably lofty. TKIP also has a function called "message integrity verification" (MIC). In the digital world, that's the same as signing your name to a file.
