What Is Googol?
It's just mind boggling stuff. A googol is not just a number. It's a state of mind. A googol is a tremendous numeric value of 10 to the 100th power, or factorial 70 (70!). It is written as the number 1, followed by 100 zeros. The Google search engine and brand are derived from this term. It is also known as ten-thousand (10,000) sexdecillion, ten-thousand (10,000) duotrigintillion, and ten-thousand (10,000) sexdecilliard. We all have an inner googol, that part of us that knows we're limitless in our potential and imagination. That part of us knows we can do anything we set our minds to. That part of us believes in magic and miracles and has faith that they'll happen every day if we just let them! Ever wondered what would occur if you tried to name a large number with 100 zeros? Well, if you're like most individuals, the answer is probably "nothing." But if you're the nephew of an American mathematician, the answer is Googol. Edward Kasner (the father of mathematics) coined the term in 1938 when he was nine. His nephew Milton Sirotta was helping him with a math problem and thought it would be fun to create a considerable number of words. After thinking for a while, Milton came up with "googol," which means 10100 in binary (1 followed by 100 zeros). While Googol has little practical use in mathematics, it's still used today to name huge numbers or compare big things. For instance: If you were trying to count how many grains of sand there were on Earth and wanted to know how many times bigger than that number, there'd be enough sand to fill up our solar system, then you could use Googol as your guide!
