What Is Forward Compatible?
Forward compatible is the ability of an IT system to be compatible with or to support a similar version of itself in the future. It is different from backward compatible, which means that older versions of the software can run on newer versions of their operating system. For example, buying a new car may not be forward-compatible with the following year's model. If you have a smartphone and want to upgrade to the latest model, you may need a new SIM card or a new memory chip depending on how your phone works. Forward compatibility is necessary to allow more contemporary versions of an IT system to work with older versions. In other words, forward compatibility ensures that a system's new version will be compatible with the current version. The primary purpose of forwarding compatibility is to reduce the risk of disruptions to users; forward compatibility is crucial for large enterprises with many users who may need to access the same system simultaneously. Forward compatibility also applies to cloud-based systems; these systems must be forward-compatible. Forward compatible is also known as upward compatible, future-time compatible or newer-version compatible. It means a program can run on older computers using a more recent version of the same programming language. Forward compatibility is often an afterthought in planning, but it is just as crucial as backward compatibility. An IT system's forward compatibility enables an organization to upgrade to the next generation of its system smoothly. When an organization is considering buying a new system, it must ensure that it will be compatible with the current system and any future releases of the current system. Forward compatibility is using recent software and hardware with newer versions. For example, if you buy a new laptop, it should be able to run your old software and be compatible with other devices.
