What Is Flexible Single-Master Operation (FSMO)?
Flexible single master operation (Short for FSMO) is a specialized domain controller task used when standard data transfer and update methods are inadequate. Functions that do not suit multi-master replication are only viable as flexible single-master operations. And if you're just now thinking, "what the heck does that mean?"—you're not alone! It's a confusing term, and it's used to describe many different things in the world of Microsoft Active Directory. The easiest way to understand FSMO is to think about how your network works: there are multiple computers (or "servers"), each with its own job. Some servers are responsible for sending emails, some handle your website, and others manage your files or provide other services. Some serve as both email servers AND website hosts. The point is that these different services are provided by different computers (or "servers"). The FSMO roles are like a cross between a magical crown and a powerful wizard: they can be seized by anyone who knows how to use them, and they can also be transferred to other domains. They're not just used for domain controllers—any server can hold an FSMO role. You can view the FSMO functions on your network using MMC or VB scripts, and you can transfer them as well. If you ever want to take a domain controller offline (for maintenance, for example), it's best to seize its FSMO roles first so that no one else can take over while you're away. In Active Directory, there's no difference between these different types of servers—all computers can do everything they need to do because they all have access to the same data center. But sometimes, you need one server to be responsible for doing something important—like making sure everyone's passwords are safe—and that's where FSMO comes in!
