What Is Federated Identity Manager (FIM)?
Federated Identity Manager (FIM) are the secret identities of super-heroes. They're a system that assists in managing identities and providing access to resources across different security domains and companies. Organizations can use FIMs to manage their users' identities and access privileges across multiple domains, such as Windows and Unix domains. This is done by assigning one identifier to each user, identifying them no matter where they log in or how many systems they use within the organization. An FIM also allows administrators to collect essential data about employees' usage of and preferences for their systems. This data can be used to make future system design decisions. An FIM also allows administrators to troubleshoot and resolve issues with users' systems remotely. For example, say there's an issue with an employee's login, such as incorrect credentials. If a company's system has an FIM, it can remotely troubleshoot the problem and determine that it is with the employee's computer or device, not the system itself. FIM is a fantastic way to give your organization's members access to services and subsystems without maintaining an extensive database of user credentials. FIM is also a great way to share your user databases across organizations. You have to transfer your identity records to the other organizations that agree to share their data. When dealing with an identity, it's all about the traits. FIM enables one user identity across multiple systems, allowing users to self-authenticate to access specific resources and services. Each organization subsystem user is self-authenticated to access specific resources and services. Instead of using separate authentication procedures for each subsystem, FIM enables one user identity for use across multiple systems. This person is referred to as a Federated Identity. It's like having one giant library where everyone can borrow books—if you're tired of carrying around ten different library cards in your wallet, FIM might be for you!
