What Is Enterprise Information Portal (EIP)?
Do You know that thing where you're a head honcho and have to make a decision? You know, like "do we expand into the Midwest?" or "should we invest in that new technology?" or "how should we handle this particular client's needs?" It's a big deal. And sometimes, it can really feel like you're on your own, trying to find the best possible way to solve that problem. But what if there were a system that would help you make those decisions? A plan would just give you the answers, even before you knew what questions to ask. That's what an executive information system (EIS) is all about. It's a decision support system (DSS) used to assist senior executives in decision-making. It does this by providing easy access to essential data needed to achieve strategic goals in an organization. An EIS typically features graphical displays on an easy-to-use interface. If you've ever read a book, you already know how important it is to have an attractive title. You want something catchy and memorable but also accurate and informative. So why is the executive information system (EIS) industry so bad at titles? "Executive Information System," "Enterprise Information System," "Enterprise Resource Planning…" These are just some of the names you might have heard used to refer to EIS over the years and while they're not wrong, they're not helpful either. What do they mean? What do they tell us about what an EIS is or does? What if, instead of trying to be all things to all people, we focused on one thing: making sure that executives had access to key information when they needed it? That's what an EIS does—it gives executives the tools and data they need to make decisions quickly, efficiently and confidently.
