What Is Data Mirroring?
Data mirroring is a copy-and-paste method of storing data. It's used to keep multiple copies of the same information in different locations so that you have another to fall back on if anything happens to one copy. Data mirroring can be done in real-time or on demand. It usually involves making an exact copy of your data and storing it somewhere else, like on another computer or a backup drive. Data mirroring ensures that if something goes wrong with one location, you have an exact duplicate somewhere else, so you don't lose any of your information. It's often used in conjunction with other techniques to ensure redundancy: for example, if you set up a RAID array (RAID stands for "redundant array of independent disks") on your computer before using data mirroring, then if one drive fails, you won't lose any data because the RAID array is duplicating it. If a disaster strikes, you can't afford to lose any data. What if you could have a backup copy of your data stored away in another location to still have your precious information even if disaster strikes? That's where data mirroring comes in. Data mirroring involves copying your data onto two separate hard drives within your system. This process is called disk duplexing when done with different systems (meaning each system has at least a separate hard drive controller card). If the original drive fails, the mirrored drive can be seamlessly switched in to replace it. Data mirroring is particularly useful for rapid disaster recovery, as it makes it possible to quickly recover from a failure without reinstalling everything from scratch. Disk duplexing is a fancy term for "live mirror," meaning that the copy of a dataset is updated as soon as the original is changed. It's like having an exact copy of your files on your computer but in real life!
