What Is Data Center Operations?
Data Center Operations are the little things that make a data center hub. They're the processes, routines and procedures that keep your company's servers running smoothly. Data center operations cover everything from the mundane to the complex. You'll find them in everything from server maintenance to disaster recovery plans and workstation configuration to network upgrades. Data Center Operations can be as simple as ensuring that all your employees know how to turn off their laptops when they leave for the day or as complicated as figuring out how many backup generators you need in an emergency. When your data center needs to be operational, you need to ensure that all the processes involved in keeping it running are running smoothly. And we're not just talking about the machine-level methods. Those are important, but you must also ensure that human-level processes are running right. That means ensuring your employees have the training and resources they need to do their jobs correctly, and it means ensuring that those employees have the tools necessary to do their jobs well. This includes computing and non-computing processes specific to a data center facility or environment and all automated and manual processes essential to keep the data center operational. Data center operations are the dullest, most tedious part of being a superhero. But it's also an integral part! The data center is where all your information is stored—everything from customer records to employee phone numbers to files you want to keep forever. It's stuff, and it needs to be safe. So how do you make sure everything is secure? Well, that's where data center operations come in. They're like the bland sidekick who keeps an eye on things while you're out fighting crime (or whatever superheroes do). Data center operations include all processes and procedures performed within a data center: power management, cooling systems, security systems, etc.
