If your phone company knows more about you than you do, it's probably Carrier IQ. Carrier IQ is a company that provides analytics software to various telecom providers. They've developed programs that offer information about smartphone users to cellphone carriers, like what apps they use, how often they use them, how long they spend on them, and even where the user is using them. The problem with this is that there needs to be a way for an average user to know whether or not her carrier has installed these programs on her phone. Even if she knows that her page uses the Carrier IQ program, she cannot opt out of it or stop it from collecting data about her activities and movements. The fact that this kind of information is being collected without our knowledge or consent raises serious privacy concerns—yet we have no say in whether or not our carriers can do this. Privacy advocates are up in arms over the Carrier IQ scandal, which involves a company collecting performance data on smartphone users. Carrier IQ gathers performance data, tracking and logging what users do on their phones. This can include calls made, texts sent, and emails received. While this is not necessarily an invasion of privacy in terms of content (e.g., Carrier IQ does not have access to the actual content of phone calls), it does present a risk to user privacy because it allows third parties access to information about whom you called or texted, whether you're using your phone to browse the web or send emails, etc. The issue came to light when reports revealed that Carrier IQ had collected information about users' phone activity without their knowledge or consent. It was reported that some phones were even sending data from users' text messages directly to Carrier IQ without permission from the device's owner!

Calculating the voltage, current, and resistance values in a circuit and predicting how changing one of these parameters will impact the others is valuable information for engineers and technicians. It's not that simple, but for the sake of this article, one is for horses, and one is for cows. A public-key infrastructure (PKI) certificate is a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate that uses the public-key infrastructure for encryption and authentication. It is a specific SSL certificate used in Internet transactions to establish trusted connections over the network. The term "public-key infrastructure" refers to public and private encryption keys. These keys allow you to encrypt information so that only the intended recipient can decrypt it and vice versa—so that only you can translate your encrypted data. The idea behind PKI certificates is that they act as digital ID cards: You take a photo of yourself, and it gets stored on an ID card with your name on it; then, you show that ID card when you want to prove who you are. The problem with this system is that anyone can get their hands on a copy of your ID card—and if they do, they'll know your name. However, if someone were to steal your PKI certificate, all they would be able to do is send encrypted messages that you—and no one else in possession of your certificate—could only decrypt. In a nutshell, public-key infrastructure certificates are like a key to a lock. You've got your safety and key—but if you want to access whatever's inside the lock, you need both. Public-key infrastructure certificates work on the idea of public-key cryptography, just the theory that information can be encrypted using a combination of public and private keys. The public key is used to encrypt data that can then only be decoded with the private key. It makes it impossible for anyone who doesn't have access to your private key to get into your stuff. And since this system relies on trust and verification from a trusted third party (i. e., SSL), it's considered very secure.
