What Is Carbon Copy (cc or c.c.)?
Carbon Copy (cc or c. c. ) is the best way to send a message to a group of people. In the old days, you would write a letter, put it in an envelope, and mail it. Then you'd go back to the desk and write a second letter, but that one in another envelope, and send it as well. The next day, you'd get two letters back from your friends—one with just their names written on top, and one with all their words written on top plus yours. It was easier than writing out each name individually every time! It was called carbon copying because, well… it involved carbon paper. Nowadays we don't use carbon paper anymore—we use computers! We can send copies of the same email message to multiple recipients simultaneously using this exciting new feature called "carbon copy. " A carbon copy is a copy of a document that has been made to be shared with another person. It's called a "carbon" copy because it was traditionally written on carbon paper, which would produce an imprint on another sheet of paper. When you send an email to multiple people, you can cc one or more by typing their email addresses in the To field. The cc field will show all the addresses you've added, but only the first address will receive a copy of the email message sent to all recipients. Carbon copy is a great way to separate the wheat from the chaff. You can use cc to send a message to your boss and your coworker, but you don't have to deal with them both at once. While it's true that there's no limit to the number of recipients you can include in the cc field (and while we hope no one will ever use this feature), we do recommend using it sparingly. So your boss doesn't need to see your email exchange with your coworker about how hard it is to find good coffee shops in town.
