What Is Bootleg?
We are not talking about bringing or creating some suspicious drink out in the woods, which would get you into severe trouble. It is yet circulated for a very long time. Bootleg has been around for ages, but it's only recently become a buzzword in the tech world. Bootleg is the unauthorized sale, duplication or distribution of any product. In computing, the bootleg is synonymous with piracy or software's unauthorized copying or distribution for resale or personal reproduction. In the music industry, bootleg refers explicitly to the unauthorized recording, copying, trading and distribution of live music. It's easy to see why bootlegs are so famous. They're cheap and easy to get your hands on! If you're considering downloading music from your favorite band's concert without paying, think again: bootlegging is illegal and punishable by law, even if you don't get caught! Bootleg software often contains malicious code that can steal your company's data, spy on employees, or cause a system shutdown. Unauthorized software can also open your company to legal liability, mainly if used to process sensitive data. Additionally, bootleg software is usually less secure than its legal counterparts, which leaves your company vulnerable to cyber attacks. You can sign up for a software vendor risk assessment to avoid purchasing bootleg software. These independent risk auditors conduct due diligence to evaluate the vendor's internal controls. Software bootlegging is more common than you might think. It happens when you purchase legitimate software and install it on more than one computer without purchasing additional licenses. It's also possible to buy pirated software and install it on more than one computer. Pirated software is usually cracked or downloaded from a torrent site. These scenarios could result in severe consequences. Bootlegs are the best way to get your favorite artist's music. It's free and just as good as the real thing!
