What Is Baseband Unit (BBU)?
The Baseband Unit (BBU) is a device in telecom systems that transports a baseband frequency, usually from a remote radio unit, which may tie it through an optical fiber. It's like the little engine that could, except instead of pulling a train over the hill, it's carrying information between two pieces of equipment. This job is essential because, without it, there would be no way for your cell phones to talk to or anyone else's phones! A baseband system is one in which the data samples have a nonzero mean value (as opposed to a modulating signal such as a public phone network). The BBU is responsible for converting the baseband signal to an optical signal. The optical signal is then transported to another location and converted back to the baseband. The baseband signal may transport the baseband signal through fiber, copper, or other transmission media. The BBU alters the data flow to an optical signal, which is then sent through an optical fiber. The optical signal is converted back to the baseband when it reaches the remote location. The main advantage of BBUs is that they can use them in a wide range of telecom systems that route data to user endpoints, as well as for different types of enterprise architectures. The baseband unit houses a data converter that changes digital signals into analog signals for transmission. The conversion process is sampling input data at a frequency that can be interpreted as analog, then converting the data back to digital form when received. A baseband unit receives data from a host device such as a computer, console, or cellular phone. The data is obtained as digital information and is then converted to analog signals for delivery via a wireless system. Baseband units are tiny, but they have a big job. These little devices streamline communication through the physical interface and help you save space and money in your telecom systems. They're also easy to deploy and consume meager amounts of power.
