Uber Is Bringing Doorstep Pickup To Retail Returns Starting With Uber Eats

Overall Rating
Uber is adding another convenience play to Uber Eats, this time by letting customers return eligible retail purchases without stepping outside. The new feature brings courier pickups, instant refund initiation, and another reason for shoppers to keep more of their buying activity inside Uber’s app ecosystem.

TL;DR

  • Uber Eats now lets customers request courier pickups for eligible retail returns from the app
  • Refunds are initiated once the courier collects the item
  • The service applies to retail items priced above $20 and depends on each store’s return policy
  • Launch partners include major retailers such as Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, Pacsun, and Target

How Uber Eats Returns Works For Eligible Retail Orders

Uber's new Returns feature is built directly into the Uber Eats app and starts in a familiar place, order history. Customers tap “Return an item,” select the product they want to send back, choose a reason, and, if the item qualifies under the store’s policy, finish the process by selecting “Return with a courier.”

The big selling point is convenience. Instead of driving to a store, finding parking, waiting in line, and handling the return in person, users can have a courier pick up the item from their doorstep for a fee. Uber says that the return fee is based on time and distance, which means the cost can vary depending on how far the courier has to travel and how long the trip takes.

The company is also leaning into speed. Refunds are initiated as soon as the courier picks up the returned item, although the actual timing for funds to appear still depends on bank processing.

For shoppers ordering higher-priced retail goods through Uber Eats, that could make the feature feel less like a delivery add-on and more like a full shopping safety net.

At initial launch, the service will be available at thousands of retail locations on Uber Eats, including Best Buy, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Pet Food Express, Pacsun, and Petco, with more to come soon.

Why Uber Is Expanding Beyond Delivery Into Retail Returns

The launch is also another sign that Uber wants its app to do more than move people and meals. The returns feature fits into its broader push to make the platform stickier by adding services that keep users inside the app for more parts of daily life.

Uber has experimented in adjacent categories before. In 2020, it launched Connect, which let couriers deliver packages between friends, family members, and coworkers.

It later introduced Uber Direct for retailer deliveries, and in 2023 expanded Uber Connect with a “Return a Package” option that let users send up to five parcels to USPS, UPS, or FedEx locations.

What Limits Apply To Uber Eats Doorstep Returns

There are some clear guardrails. The feature only applies to eligible retail items bought through Uber Eats, and those items must comply with the retailer’s return policy listed in the app. Uber also says courier returns are currently available only for retail items priced at $20 or more.

At launch, the feature is rolling out across thousands of retail locations in the US, with more partners expected over time. Customers who would rather handle it themselves can still return items directly to the store at no cost.
