What Is Workload Management?
Many think that workload management is the same as "workload" management, but it's not. Workload management, or WLM, is a process for determining the proper workload distributions to provide optimal performance for applications and users. It allows the organization to control or micromanage where each work request is run to maximize workload throughput and enhance performance by ensuring no single processing node is overtaxed while others are underutilized. WLM is most commonly used in enterprise environments with heavy reliance on distributed computing (i.e., computing resources spread out over multiple physical locations). For example, an enterprise might connect many remote offices through a wide area network (WAN) link, such as a T1 line or DSL connection. WLM enables administrators to manage the distribution of work across these nodes so that no one location becomes saturated with requests while other locations remain idle. This allows for better utilization of resources across the entire system because it prevents any location from being overwhelmed with requests while others remain underutilized." So let's say you're running a server farm with many servers. You have clients connecting to all these servers using multiple applications simultaneously and expecting consistent execution times and predictable access to network resources and databases. The workload manager of the system fulfills these expectations by controlling access of each workload to system resources such as computing power, memory and I/O units through prioritization or other algorithms specified by the system administrator. Some workloads are given more I/O operations and less computing power, while others are given the reverse, based entirely on the workload they're meant for. This kind of management allows us to achieve maximum efficiency: we can ensure that each application gets what it needs to run smoothly while keeping an eye on our budgeting needs so we don't overspend on resources!
