What Is Wireless Internet Service Provider Roaming (WISPr)?
Calling all WISPs! Get ready to whisper. We don't mean the kind of whispering you do when you're nervous or when someone is telling a secret. This is the kind of secret that will blow your mind! We mean the kind of whispering you do when you're talking to your friend, and she's too far away to hear you, so you sort of mumble in her direction. That's right, WISPr is here! It's a framework that enables wireless Internet subscribers to roam between wireless Internet service providers (WISPs). WISPr provides the operational practices, technology infrastructure/resources and comprehensive security framework that enables users to roam between Wi-Fi-powered Internet services. WISPr was created to ensure you can roam between Wi-Fi networks while maintaining your connection to the internet. This is important because it allows you to get online no matter where you are in the world, and it also allows you to connect with other people who are also connected via WISPr. WISPr has created a framework that includes several operational, technical, and management tools and techniques to ensure this happens. These include: a browser-based login mechanism called Universal Access Method (UAM) for any TCP/IP enabled Wi-Fi device; a RADIUS server for authenticating user's credentials and maintaining the AAA suite of services; and an intermediary roaming service provider who handles accounting processes between WISPs, so there is transparency involved. So if your WISP has been holding out on offering roaming capabilities because it was too complex or expensive for them to do, then this is your opportunity! With WISPr, there's no need for your customers to get locked into contracts with you and no need for them to carry multiple devices around. They can go where they need to go and connect seamlessly with whatever network they need, given the moment.
