What Is Wake-On-LAN (WoL)?
WoL, or Wake-On-LAN, allows you to control your computer easily with a magic remote. Like turning off a TV with a remote and turning it back on with the same remote, you can put your computer to sleep and wake it up from anywhere. Wake-On-LAN is a method by which a dormant computer or other devices can be remotely roused from its sleep or hibernation state. Specifically, it employs a so-called "magic packet" transmitted over the network and received by the network card in the device. The computer or device is then roused into action by the network card. Just like you can turn off your TV with a remote and turn it back on with the same remote, you can do the same with your computer by putting it to sleep and then waking it up from any location. Computer technicians who need remote access to a machine anytime, even if it's powered down, will appreciate this function. Users can save energy by turning the computer off when it's not in use and turning it back on again remotely. Most of today's motherboards and network cards have built-in support for the technology; however, it must be enabled in the system's BIOS or firmware settings. Wake-On-LAN employs the UDP protocol and, by default, opens communication on port 9. #WakeOnLAN #WoL #RemoteControl #SleepMode #HibernateMode #MagicPacket #NetworkCard #IT #EnergySaving Wake-On-LAN (WoL) is a method by which a dormant computer or other devices can be remotely woken up. The network card can wake up the computer or device by sending a "magic packet" over the network. It's like having a magic remote for your computer; you can put it to sleep and then wake it up from anywhere. This is helpful for IT professionals who need to access a computer remotely, even if it's turned off. It also helps users conserve energy by turning the computer off when it's not in use. Most new motherboards and network cards have hardware support for the technology; however, it must be enabled in the system's BIOS or firmware settings.
