What Is Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM)?
The Virtual Machine Monitor is your virtualization best friend. It's a piece of software that can help you manage, govern, and create virtual machines. It ensures your virtualized environment runs smoothly on top of a physical host machine. It's pretty cool to have a piece of software that can do everything for you, but wait until you see what else it can do! Virtual machines are great. They let you run an operating system in a safe environment, which means that if your computer crashes, the virtual machine will still be there, and you can restart it. But what happens when your computer crashes? If you've got a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), your virtual machines will still be there, and you can restart them. The VMM is the program that enables the creation of virtual machines and also manages their operation. It allows you to create new virtual machines on top of a physical host machine, like if you want to run Windows 10 inside of Linux Mint or something like that and keeps track of everything in your virtualized environment. VMMs (Virtual Machine Managers) and Hypervisors are both types of virtualization software, but they're not quite the same thing. VMM: A VMM is virtualization software that allows you to run multiple operating systems on one computer—or, in some cases, across multiple computers without those operating systems being aware that they're sharing hardware. The operating systems are virtualized, meaning they don't know they're not running on separate machines. The VMM also handles the management of each operating system's resources. Hypervisor: A hypervisor is a type of VMM that also provides virtualization services for guest operating systems (the OSes running inside the VM). VMM is the cool guy of virtualization. It's like a VCD but can control and manage multiple hosts, not just one. It's also like a DVD because it has a DVD player that plays the VMs on whatever host you want. And it's also like a DVR because it records all the information about your VMs so you can watch them later. So basically, saying that VMM is everything you could ever want in your life.
