What Is Virtual Internet Service Provider (VISP)?
You know, there are times when you're sitting at home, and let's say it's not going well for you at all. It's a rainy day, and you're waiting for your internet to come back to watch the new episode of GOT. Then you remember: you're not staying at home! You're at work, trying to finish a report before the deadline. Then it hits you: if only an internet service provider (ISP) allowed me to access the internet from multiple points of presence (POPs), we could be watching my show even though my ISP isn't working! Well, now there is! Introducing Virtual Internet Service Provider (VISP), an ISP that lets you access the internet through multiple points of presence (POPs). The main advantage of a virtual ISP is choosing the best service in your area. You don't have to sign up with an ISP that is not the best in your area. Another advantage of using a virtual ISP is switching to another without hassle. There are many advantages to using a virtual ISP, but the most significant disadvantage is that you cannot brand your service. Virtual ISP, or VISP (pronounced "Visp"), is one of the more complicated things to understand in technology. It's a special kind of Internet service provider that, instead of providing service to its customers, provides the appearance of doing so. So what does that mean? If you're using a virtual ISP, you're not connecting with any servers your ISP owns. You're connecting with servers owned by other companies. The process helps save money for companies who want Internet access without building their infrastructure. It's also useful for people who want to run their independent networks without dealing with the hassle (and cost) of operating an actual server farm.
