What Is Virtual Circuit (VC)?
If you've ever tried to give directions to a stranger in a new city, you know how hard it can be to explain the best thing is to get from point A to point B. That's because there are so many ways to get anywhere, and most routers don't exist! Of course, this isn't true for virtual circuits. Unlike the real world, where we're limited by physical constraints (traffic patterns and road closures), virtual circuits are built based on our needs and desires. The result is a system that provides us with a wide range of options for completing any given task—without having to deal with traffic jams or construction delays. Virtual circuits let us create connections between devices that don't necessarily exist on a virtual network (they're just connected by software). They also allow us to control how those devices interact so that if one device fails or goes offline unexpectedly, there won't be any service disruption (because there never was an actual connection between them). Imagine you're a network engineer and want to send a data packet to your boss. How do you do it? Do you take out a piece of paper and write down the address of your boss's office, then send the report along with the packet? Or do you just put it in an envelope and send it? If you sent it in an envelope, then congratulations! You've just used virtual circuit switching! Unlike datagram switching, virtual-circuit switching sets out a data packet path in its way, dynamically and on a case-by-case basis. Experts identify advantages of virtual circuit design, including fewer allocated resources, packets delivered in proper order, and reliable networking outputs.Think of the virtual circuit as a "smart" routing system that does not adhere to strict path rules. In that sense, the "virtual circuit" is flexible in a way that a traditional circuit printed on a circuit board is not.
