What Is Video Buffer?
Maybe you've heard of a video buffer before, but perhaps you haven't. Maybe you think it's just a fancy word for "a place to store things." Well, that's not exactly true. A video buffer is a portion of your computer's physical memory used to store video or graphics information where it moves from the renderer to the display screen or monitor. The system cache is where your computer stores data temporarily while processing it by other parts of your machine. Video memory is like an extension of the system cache. It holds more data than needed for temporary processing purposes but less than a hard drive. As buffers in general, the video buffer is used to organize data and ensure that the data are moved from their source to their destination. Although it has many things similar to the system cache or the video memory, it is separate from both. A video buffer is a virtual storage that holds all the visual elements you see on the screen. For example, it keeps track of menus, windows, images, videos, etc. We need to use a video buffer to make everything on the screen appear seamless and the transition smooth. In-memory processing is faster than on-screen processing so, using a video buffer lets the screen content be processed before you even use it so that it does not need to process when the actual data are required. The video buffer is a part of the computer's Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) card or onboard graphics that stores pixels on a frame-by-frame basis. This buffer allows you to view the video in real-time even if your computer can't keep up with the speed of the video you are trying to watch. The video buffer is essential for watching live-stream videos. With a video buffer, you don't have to worry about stuttering or pausing if the bandwidth of the live stream falls below the speed of the video you are watching.
