What Is Tab Delimited?
You'll want to know the tab-delimited format if you use Excel, Access, or any other spreadsheet program regularly. It is also known as the "common text format" and is widely accepted for creation and viewing by most spreadsheet programs and editor applications. When you open a tab-delimited file with Excel, your "raw" data is automatically converted to usable information. Many spreadsheet programs allow you to export a text file in tab-delimited format. Tab-delimited files are easy to interpret because each entry sits in its line; this makes them an excellent option for importing data into other programs where you have no control over what fields are used (think database). The delimiters are usually commas, semicolons, or tab characters and are determined by the program that creates the file. Like the CSV format, tab-delimited files are easily open in any spreadsheet program. Most programs that can open spreadsheets can also open tab-delimited files. Can open tab-delimited files in any spreadsheet, but not all spreadsheets can open tab-delimited files; tabs are the only way to make data transferable between different programs. Each program that supports TSV files uses tabs in a slightly different way. Most programs display the tabs as asterisks (*) or dashes (-). Many programs allow you to select how many asterisks or dashes are displayed for every tab. For example, Microsoft Excel displays one asterisk for every tab. Some programs will enable you to set the length of the tab. For example, Microsoft Word will allow you to select the tab size between one and nine asterisks. Tab Delimited is a text format widely accepted for creation and viewing by most spreadsheet programs and editor applications. Tab-delimited text files are unique because an entry in the file cannot take more than one line and has various fields separated by tabs. Each entry must also have the same number of areas.
