What Is Suspend Mode?
Have you ever wondered why your laptop's screen goes black when it's not plugged in? That's because it's suspended mode, and you're saving energy! If you're a fan of the "invisible" computer, you've probably heard of suspend mode. It's a low-power computer setting that helps reduce electrical power consumption by shutting down devices that are not in use. Most laptops automatically enter stop mode when the system runs on batteries or the lid is closed. This standing is often signaled by a pulsing LED-powered light which makes sense since your laptop is just an elaborate trap for light at this point. What if your laptop doesn't have an LED light? Or what if it does have one, and it just isn't working? Is there another way to tell whether or not your laptop is in suspend mode? Yes! If your laptop has a physical power button (and many don't), then pressing it once will cause your machine to exit suspend mode and boot up normally. If you want to confirm this has happened, open Task Manager and check to see if all processes are running normally. If so, then congrats: You've successfully exited suspend mode! The process is called a complete shutdown when you shut down your computer. When you put your computer into sleep mode, it's called stop mode. The ACPI standard defines two different types of suspend: S1 and S3. ACPI mode S1 is used to turn off computers that are not connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). If you're using a laptop or desktop with no battery backup, your hard drive will stop spinning, and your monitor will turn off. However, your computer will still be on and running in this mode. ACPI mode S2 hibernates computers connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). It means that if you're using a laptop or desktop with a battery backup, it will go into hibernation instead of entirely shutting down, which allows for faster booting times when restarting the system. It's like that crazy aunt because it provides a backbone for sleep and hibernation in computers, which is great for when you want your computer to go into standby mode or hibernate. The difference between ACPI mode S3 and suspend mode is that with ACPI mode S3, you can turn off monitors and spin down hard drives without worrying about losing power.
